Sydney Black Lives Matter Rally, June 6 2020

The Black Lives Matter demonstration in Sydney drew over 20,000 people, protesting against Aboriginal deaths in custody and supporting the global Black Lives Matter movement. The Supreme Court had issued a ban on the protest the previous night, based on COVID 19 restrictions, but this ruling was overturned by The NSW Court of Appeal as the rally got underway. Participants were jubilant when organisers announced that the rally was officially lawful as thousands of people gathered outside Sydney Town Hall before marching to Belmore Park. Police used pepper spray on a group of protesters at Central Station after the rally had finished. The majority of protesters wore a mask or some kind of face covering as a precaution against the potential spread of COVID 19.
